I had the great pleasure of working with the team at Spilt Milk Studios on the 'Wallace & Gromit Special Pack' DLC for for PowerWash Simulator. I specialised in vehicle modelling, and it was a joy to create some iconic machines from the films that i grew up watching on VHS.
Modelling for Powerwash Simulator presents some novel challenges:
All models need to be split into seperate, non-intersecting named pieces, for the sake of the per-part washing gameplay.
Seperate materials are assigned to every part piece on their physical material i.e. metal, wood, fabric etc - as each material reacts differently to the washer, visually and audibly.
Geometry was kept fairly dense to allow the use of tileable textures for almost all surfaces on the vehicles, beyond very specific details such as cockpit controls, number plates and lights. Finding the right balance for the geometry to maintain good curvature without excessive counts was undoubtedly the biggest challenge.
Tight angles and hard to reach spots need to be 'smoothed out' for the sake of washability - good examples of this are the cockpits of the plane and snowmanotron, where the shapes have been simplfied to allow the player access with their pressure washer.
